Each of these actors brings their own unique brand of humor to the movie, helping to make it an entertaining and engaging experience from start to finish. Throughout the movie, Ferrell and Poehler's comedic chemistry shines, as they deliver laugh after laugh with their signature brand of humor. Simpkins also impresses as their daughter Alex, who is both funny and relatable as she navigates her way through the chaos that her parents have created.

The House Reviews

The House is a solid, if unremarkable, big studio comedy with fleeting moments of humor peppered throughout its runtime. Our box office wrap-up for the weekend of July 2, 2017, featuring new arrivals such as Illumination's Despicable Me 3 and Edgar Wright's Baby Driver. This Ferrell and Poehler-powered comedy blockbuster has big laughs, an enjoyably grisly streak, and a film-stealing turn from Jason Mantzoukas. All these performers are given decent setups, but the script loses interest in anything that starts to look like a comedic through line. Running less than 90 minutes, "The House" is excruciatingly flat and goes on forever. The highly-anticipated animated sequel Despicable Me 3 easily takes the top spot at the box office this weekend with $75.4 million dollars.

To make sure she gets in, they attempt to open a secret Casino in their home. Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler star as two loving parents who start an illegal casino to send their daughter to college in the trailer for The House. For every logistical inconsistency and nonsensical plot decision, it quickly becomes easier and easier to look the other way and roll with the loony tone like a pair of winning dice. It’s essentially a send-up spoof of Casino as much as it is another formulaic comedy starring the notable comedian. During their visit to Bucknell University, husband and wife Scott and Kate Johansen warn their daughter of the dangers of being in college.

Because they hardly feel like people—about halfway through, I realized I didn’t even know their characters’ names—the extraordinary scheme they’ve concocted for themselves makes no sense and has no momentum. It also has no laughs, or at least precious few, which is why a movie with this caliber of star power is being sneaked into theaters without being shown to critics ahead of time. The House is a 2017 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 28 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.6 and a MetaScore of 30. Desperate to find a solution, Scott and Kate team up with their friend Frank (played by Jason Mantzoukas) to open an illegal casino in their suburban neighborhood. The three of them soon find themselves caught up in a world of money, power, and deceit as they try to keep their operation a secret from their nosy neighbors and the police. Also, for as energetic and outlandish as Will Ferrell is, it’s Jason Mantzoukas that winds up stealing the whole movie, matching and surpassing his co-star in every way.

The House squanders a decent premise and a talented cast on thin characterizations and a shortage of comic momentum. On the weekends, watching it with a bunch of friends on the streaming platform or television would do better. Unfortunately, the hand that was dealt The House is a royal flush - but not the winning hand every poker player dreams of being dealt. The House is a strange and surprisingly dark film, a funny movie whose humor comes from unexpected places.

Will Ferrell is playing a father who starts an illegal casino to get back their daughter's college trust fund in The House. It was about the parents who lost their daughter's college scholarship, now wants an alternative solution, so they decide to go illegal. Outside of the titular house, however, Cohen struggles with finding footing for the comedy, often relying on having Ferrell and Poehler behave loud and obnoxious.

Plot

Anyway, the goal for Ferrell and Poehler is admirably to pay off their daughter’s college tuition hiding from her the truth (the town essentially screws the family out of it), while Mantzoukas thinks that such an endeavor will win back his girlfriend. He has a serious problem with hygiene, but more importantly a gambling addiction, so his line of thinking is that if he becomes the house itself, there is no addiction. Although everything that goes on here is against the law and morally gray in some area, it’s a definite positive that the leads are likable with reasons to cheer on their shady operation. When Scott and Kate Johansen’s daughter gets into the college of her dreams it’s cause for celebration. That is, until Scott and Kate learn that the scholarship they were counting on didn’t come through, and they’re now on the hook for tuition they can’t begin to afford. The House is a 2017 American comedy film directed by Andrew J. Cohen, and co-written by Cohen and Brendan O'Brien.

Netflix's The House: All 3 Story Endings Explained

Several thousand dollars away from reaching their goal, they are caught by Bob and Officer Chandler, who confiscate their money and order them to close down the casino. The house burns down after being invaded by Papouli, whom the Johansens set on fire. Having admitted their plot to Alex, they team up with Chandler, who had let them loose, to steal the money back from Bob. Chandler convinces Bob that the three continued the casino even after he had ordered them to stop, and shows a video of the people mocking him. Bob asks Chandler to go with him to arrest the Johansens at the casino, which gives the Johansens the chance to steal their money back. Dawn Mayweather, the town treasurer, alerts Bob that the Johansens are in the town hall, which convinces Bob to go back.

Mariah Carey was supposed to have a cameo in the film, but had what co-star Rob Huebel called "multiple unrealistic demands". The key ingredient to its passing grade is without a doubt the sheer madness that goes on in the illegal underground casino that Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, and Jason Mantzoukas all collaborate on starting up in Jason’s basement. Also, this is one of those movies where there’s no point writing about characters by any name other than the actor that portrays them, so keep that in mind.

Furthermore, unlike most modern comedies, The House is relatively short at 88 minutes, when most are bordering on two hours for absolutely no reason. The latest Adam Sandler Netflix creation actually pushed past two hours, which is just unholy. This movie seems to have a grasp on what works and what doesn’t as it tries to stick to the underground casino for the duration of its running time, getting in and out telling its cliché and predictable story. The house does indeed always win, even if the rewards here are slim at best. A dad and his friend start an illegal casino in his basement after he and his wife are robbed of their daughter’s college fund.

Bob runs back to the town hall on foot to find the Johansens with the money. After chasing the Johansens, Bob reveals his personal interest with the casino money as well as his plot to steal money from the city budget for himself and Dawn, who leaves him and returns to her husband Joe. Bob is arrested, while Scott and Kate use the money they took back from him to pay for their daughter's college tuition. For example, The House surprisingly has two graphic scenes of bloody violence that elicit major laughs. This movie does not give one fuck about grounding itself in reality or dealing with consequences, setting up an anything goes vibe that works in conjunction with just how stupid the movie is. How is spending a ton of money on an underground casino to make cash possible but not simply paying off the tuition?

And while The House isn’t an absolute disaster, it’s undeniable that th... The most insulting comedies are the ones that feel like glorified cast retreats. It's an interesting premise, but then when you watch the execution, it's awkward. Unless you're new to the Will Ferrell or Amy Poehler school of humor, this is as generic a "comedy" as you might expect.

“The House” is the rare raunchy comedy that actually could have stood to be a little longer—and not just by padding the running time with outtakes. Cohen cuts so briskly from each scenario to the next that they never register. And the most significant shift of all—the one that occurs within Scott and Kate—is the most extreme and the least plausible. Out of nowhere, she’s smoking pot non-stop and he’s reinvented himself as an enforcer known as “The Butcher.” They start wearing flashy, gangster-style clothing.

Alex acknowledges her parents' warnings and expresses her interest in attending the same university her parents went to. Alex gets accepted to the university, which the Johansens expect to be funded by their community's scholarship program. One of the strengths of The House is its supporting cast, which includes a number of talented comedians like Mantzoukas, Nick Kroll, and Rob Huebel.

Back home, Frank convinces the Johansens to start an underground casino at his house to raise money for Alex's tuition and to help him get his wife back. The casino operation proves to be running smoothly as they gain more customers. In another community town-hall meeting, Bob becomes suspicious at the low attendance and suspends the meeting to launch an investigation. Back at the Johansens' casino, Frank discovers that one of the gamblers, Carl, is counting cards. The Johansens and Frank confront him, but he brags that he works for mob boss Tommy Papouli.

That’s because the updated language extends the timeline for ByteDance to divest TikTok before the effective ban would be enforced. ByteDance would get up to a year to complete the sale, rather than just six months, in order to avoid a ban. The new House text would provide an initial divestment period of nine months and give the president discretion to extend it another three, assuming there’s progress toward a deal. The House once again passed a bill that could ban TikTok from the US unless its Chinese parent company ByteDance divests it — but this time, it’s in a way that will be harder for the Senate to stall. As the casino becomes more and more successful, Scott and Kate must grapple with the consequences of their actions, and confront the fact that they might be in over their heads.

If the TikTok bill remains in the final version of the Senate package and clears that hurdle, it will head to President Joe Biden’s desk. He’s already committed to signing the TikTok legislation, should it pass. The first official trailer arrives for The House, a comedy in which two parents (Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler) run an illegal casino.

Despite a worthy cast and a fun premise, this comedy feels like a missed opportunity. It's not a shining example of a great comedy, but The House is funny and creative enough to mildly recommend if you're looking to switch your brain off for 90 minutes. Unfortunately, that's not the case in this hit-and-miss comedy from first-time director (and co-writer) Andrew Jay Cohen, but there are still some guilty-pleasure laughs to be had along the way. Even movies like Requiem for a Dream and Midnight Express contain more laughs than The House. The movie also benefits from its sharp writing, which blends satire, slapstick, and social commentary in a way that is both clever and insightful. While the movie is certainly over-the-top and ridiculous at times, it never feels cheap or lazy, and is always rooted in a solid foundation of character development and storytelling. Just about all of the chaos that goes on in this casino (including the ridiculous owners attempting to dress sharp) is realized with inspired lunacy; even if you know what’s coming, the execution is still surprising.

Scott accidentally chops off Carl's middle finger, earning him the nickname "The Butcher", making the community afraid of him, which inadvertently increases their profits. Unfortunately, during a community town hall meeting, city councilor Bob Schaeffer announces that they will not be doing the scholarship program, in favor of building a community pool, to which everyone agrees except the Johansens. The couple tries to find funding through asking for a loan, a salary raise for Scott, and getting Kate's job back, but everything is denied. They reluctantly agree to accompany their friend and neighbor, Frank Theodorakis, whose wife Raina is divorcing him over his gambling and porn addiction, to a previously-planned trip to Las Vegas. After numerous wins playing craps, they lose their winnings after Scott jinxes the table by telling Frank not to roll a seven.

I stopped giving a damn about the answers to questions like this simply because the jokes frequently hit and came at a rapid pace. Here, Ferrell and Poehler—fellow former “Saturday Night Live” cast members who also co-starred in “Blades of Glory”—barely seem to know each other, much less enjoy any sort of chemistry. Overall, The House is a hilarious and enjoyable comedy that offers plenty of laughs for fans of Ferrell and Poehler, as well as anyone who appreciates a good, old-fashioned, high-stakes casino caper. With its sharp writing, talented cast, and satisfying story, it's a movie that is definitely worth checking out. 2017's The House is a comedy film by director Andrew Jay Cohen and starring Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler. The film follows two parents who hope to pay for their daughter's college only to find out their hopes of a scholarship and funding have been dashed.

On February 25, 2015, it was announced that New Line Cinema had won an auction for the comedy script The House, written by Brendan O'Brien and Andrew J. Cohen, and that Cohen would make his directorial debut with the film. Will Ferrell would star as a husband who teams up with his wife and neighbors to start an illegal casino in his basement, to earn money after their daughter's college scholarship is lost. Ferrell and Adam McKay produced through Gary Sanchez Productions, along with Good Universe and O'Brien.

Much of the dead air involves lame, lazy sexual humor such as a drunk Poehler pissing on their front yard. It’s in these moments that you’ll definitely wish for the film to head back to the casino as quickly as possible. In general, Poehler probably could have been given better material, but she does develop her own deadly trade alongside Ferrell’s butchering of cheaters. There’s also one too many characters in the mix, as Nick Kroll plays a crooked City Hall councilmember more interested in his own personal gain and love affairs.

Amy Poehler joined the cast on June 12, 2015, to play Ferrell's character's wife. On June 16, 2015, Jason Mantzoukas joined to play Ferrell's character's best friend, who is dealing with a gambling problem, and who gives the couple the idea to start a casino. On August 28, 2015, Ryan Simpkins was added to the cast, to play Ferrell and Poehler's daughter. On September 15, 2015, Cedric Yarbrough signed on to play Reggie Henderson, a hardworking suburban resident who starts gambling in the new casino to de-stress.

Along the way, they'll face off against rival casinos, corrupt politicians, and even their own daughter, who begins to suspect that something nefarious is going on in her seemingly idyllic neighborhood. There’s more character development (and more believable plot turns) in a typical "Saturday Night Live" sketch.

After Scott and Kate Johansen (Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler) lose their daughter Alex’s college fund, they become desperate to earn it back so she can pursue her dream of attending a university. On an ill-advised trip to Las Vegas with their gambling-and-porn addicted pal, Frank (Mantzoukas), they hatch a scheme to create an underground casino in Frank’s house. He’s in the middle of an ugly divorce, and his angry, estranged wife (Watkins) has cleared out much of the furniture, so there’s plenty of room for a craps table and a roulette wheel and such. Since they’re the house—and the house always wins—they should make enough money to pay for Alex’s college education in no time. Ferrell and Poehler star as Scott and Kate Johansen, nerdy suburbanites who live in a spacious home in a charming, leafy village called Fox Meadow.

Their teenage daughter, Alex (Ryan Simpkins), has just been accepted to her dream school of Bucknell University. But for some reason, Scott and Kate never set aside any money for her college education; despite their well-off status, it’s unclear what they do for a living, and in an unfunny running bit, Scott is terrible with numbers. So they rely on the annual scholarship the town awards—only this year, soulless city councilman Bob (Kroll) plans to use that money for a lavish community pool. The House is a comedy movie that stars Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, and Ryan Simpkins. The movie follows the story of Scott and Kate Johansen (played by Ferrell and Poehler, respectively), a couple who find themselves in a financial bind when they discover that they don't have enough money to pay for their daughter's college education.

Ranch House Interior Design Photos & Ideas

The centered porch and contrasting colors draw the eye to the beautiful door and large picture windows. The grid-pattern windows on this Spanish rustic modern ranch style home add character and visual interest. The white-painted stucco looks fresh and updated against black accents and finally, the beautiful stained wood garage door pulls things together. We love a good midcentury modern ranch style home with its large windows and simple, open design. We chose Dragon’s Breath by Benjamin Moore for the roof bump out on this home and garage to contrast with the brick painted in Revere Pewter.

So What’s the History of Ranch-Style Houses?

Try to see how you will be able to go ahead and lift your ceiling all the way up to the roofline. Low-slung ceilings are common to ranch houses and this isn’t necessarily a good thing. It does pose an interesting angle on home improvements and modernizing it, though. No worries, you’ve got plenty of opportunities to refresh that look and amp up the wow factor. These ranch home remodel tips will help you reimagine your home’s outer spaces for major curb appeal and better outdoor living. Emphasize the horizontal clean lines of the ranch house by using horizontal siding, and consider adding a welcoming front porch with classic outdoor furniture.

There are California ranch homes with those deep eaves designed to keep the hot CA sun off the windows. There are Tudor-style ranch homes with tall, sharp roofs set atop single-story residences. There are the slightly style-defying split-level ranches, which are not true two-story homes and still fit the bill.

It easily brings in a modern feel to an otherwise outdated looking ranch house and makes for a great decorative statement that’s also easy to do. As charming and old-world as the architectural design may be, it does come with some downsides. You can also make windows larger to bathe those inner spaces in natural light. If yours are old and drafty, replace them with stylish, energy-efficient units. Trim kits let you match colors and add architectural accents for major charm. Oh, and a new insulated front door pulls double duty – both aesthetic and eco-friendly.

Garage Plan Collections

We also love the metal roof accents and vaulted wood beam porch on this home, both of which contrast with the siding rendered in Shoji White by Sherwin Williams. If you want a large home that doesn’t stand out or take over your landscaping, a sprawling L-shaped modern ranch style home will do the job nicely. As such, we love the painted brick, contrasting roofline, and wood doors on this home. The black vinyl window frames and lighting and copper gutters add some contrast and visual interest.

A few years later, as Hallworth was beginning to establish herself as a player in the world of interiors, Dunst turned to her friend for help in designing the star’s first proper L.A. Home, a kind of reimagined Scandinavian lake house tucked in the Hollywood Hills. The varied angular rooflines and exposed rafters of this contemporary ranch style home add a little bit of spunk, while the wood accents and stone porch provide an earthy feel. We also love how the vertical siding, horizontal siding, and brick are painted the same color (Seapearl by Benjamin Moore) to bring all the home features together. Taking advantage of natural wood tones for the window frames will bring in warmth and brightness to the space and will further emphasize the casual and laid back vibe that ranch houses are quite famous for.

Ranch style homes fuse modern ideas with the wide open spaces of the American West, creating an informal and casual living space that blends into nature. They tend to have a devoted patio or deck space, large windows, and often feature a finished basement and attached garage. In the mid-20th century, siding became common on ranch homes, with this being made out of wooden planks until the advent of vinyl siding in the late 1950s. This material would soon become quite popular for use in ranch-style house construction, vinyl being affordable, durable, and easy to work with. In ranch homes with a basement, it’s quite common for the floor of that space to be poured concrete.

After the quake, Winchester had mantles and fronts torn off fireplaces and their brick chimneys encased in metal, probably so they wouldn’t crumble in the event of another disaster. Magnuson’s thought was to mix this up with new spaces to attract new and returning visitors. After ten intense months, 40 hidden spaces—including some even the staff had only rarely seen—opened to the public in May 2017. The true nature of Winchester’s motivations is likely to remain a mystery. But as the video tour points out, the house she built was not only bizarre—it was innovative. Winchester loved to garden, so the conservatory featured an indoor watering system and wooden floorboards that could be lifted up to water plants resting below.

Lonely Planet's must-see attractions

There are windows on each of the four walls in this room, including on the ceiling and on the floor. This conservatory is down the hall from Winchester's bedroom. Winchester spent $5.5 million on her 24,000-square-foot home, which has 160 bedrooms, 40 staircases, 13 bathrooms, and 47 fireplaces. Although there are theories that the construction went on for 24 hours a day, Boehme said that is fiction.

It is also likely that the labyrinth construction of the home may have been the result of making the home functional after the earthquake. Furthermore, there are very few actual recorded incidences to back up the claims of the home being haunted by spirits. Because she was living off the gun company's fortune, the spiritualist told her to move to California and build a home that would appease and trap the ghosts who follow her.

There's also no concrete evidence that she ever visited a medium that pointed her west, Boehme said.

Even more luxurious than the fixtures was the plumbing and electrical work. Rare for the time, the Winchester Mystery House boasted indoor plumbing, including coveted hot running water, and push-button gas lighting available throughout the home. Additionally, forced-air heating flowed throughout the house.

"Winchester was quiet, which suited Sarah because she was very quiet herself," the home's historian, Janan Boehme, told Insider. "She was also a very tiny lady. She stood at about 4 feet 10 inches. She was a private person." Closing times vary, please check our Buy Tickets page for current tour times. Tragedy befell Sarah – her infant daughter died of a childhood illness and a few years later her husband was taken from her by tuberculosis. It’s suggested that Winchester sealed off the room after she was trapped here during the earthquake of 1906. A 1 hour 5 minute guided tour of the Winchester House costs $41.99 for adults, $34.99 for seniors,  and $19.99 for children 5-12.

Rites of Spring: Nature, Myth, and Legends

The most notable date in the construction of Llanada Villa was April 18, 1906, when the great San Francisco earthquake caused tremendous devastation throughout the region, and Sarah Winchester’s home suffered severe damage. The house was forever changed when chimneys collapsed, a wing was destroyed, and a prominent seven-story tower toppled down. Damage from the earthquake can still be viewed at the property even today, and the mansion was never restored to its former prominence. I have known about this famous mansion since I was a child. Many years ago, a publishing company put out a series of books that featured cut-out paper models of various haunted, mysterious houses. I took the time to meticulously put together a model of the Winchester Mystery House.

… and doors that open to a 12-foot drop, among other things.

Winchester wanted the carriage room to be covered with a roof so that she could get in and out of the house without ever getting wet by the rain. The room is also notable because there is a strange door that opens onto a wall and another door that is too small to walk through. Most of the house still stands, and visitors can explore it today. "It helped her employ people and share her wealth that way. She just never really stopped building."

Explore a Winchester Mystery House Floor Plan

William and Sarah had one daughter, Annie, who died at just 6 weeks old. They never had any other children, and William died 15 years later from tuberculosis, in 1881 at age 43. The Cap is an unfinished round room constructed with redwood beams.

In 1885, a widowed Sarah Winchester moved to California to start a new life in a farmhouse she built on 40 acres.

On the other hand, the front and older parts of the home had a traditional mansion feel to them and featured some well-furnished rooms for entertainment. We saw a ballroom, formal dining room, sitting rooms, organ, stained glass windows, chandeliers, and rooms finished to impress visitors. The first part of the home took us through the later construction in the back of the house. The rooms appeared to be an eclectic collection of fully and partially constructed spaces. The quality of the construction did not seem mansion-like to me in that the rooms did not display wealth or exceptional architectural features. A few years after the death of her husband, Sarah left her home in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1885 to relocate to San Jose, California.

Winchester first lived in San Francisco, but the weather bothered her arthritis. Instead, she decided to buy 40 acres of land and build a small farmhouse in the Santa Clara Valley. "Some of them love the architecture, some want to see the ghosts, some like the history," Janan Boehme, the historian at the house, told Business Insider in October 2019. This ridiculous yet fascinating Victorian mansion is filled with 160 mostly non-utilitarian rooms with dead-end hallways and a staircase that runs up to a ceiling.

winchester mystery house photos

And they were sad and desperate for a way to see that they were okay.” Winchester herself was dealing with the loss of her whole family. Exactly why Winchester embarked on this dizzying cycle of building, undoing and rebuilding is impossible to say. The medium reportedly instructed her to constantly build a house for these ghosts. A popular tourist attraction, the house, along with many other cultural institutions in the United States, has closed to help curb the spread of coronavirus. But as Michele Debczak reports for Mental Floss, you can now explore the Winchester House from afar via a detailed video tour posted on the mansion’s website.

When you stand precisely in the middle of the turret, your voice bounces uncannily off the walls. No one knows what happened, but Houdini found the visit memorable enough that he sent a newspaper clipping about it to the house’s owner. The front hall staircase leads to a Tiffany-style stained-glass window that surely once provided bright beams of color. But it was later completely enclosed by a new exterior wall, presumably put up at Winchester’s request. Today, some strings of tiny lights illuminate it from behind.

Sarah’s inheritance was said to be more than 20 million dollars and included a 50 percent stake in the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. In 1881, Sarah was one of the wealthiest women in the world. The interior of the mansion remains closed due to the pandemic response, but there are open-air tours of Sarah's beautiful Victorian-style gardens.

The Winchester Mystery House And The Creepy True Story Behind It

winchester mystery house photos

Sarah Winchester – heir to the Winchester-rifle fortune – spent 38 years constructing this mammoth white elephant. No expense was spared in the construction, the extreme results of which sprawl over 4 acres. Apparently, it was commissioned because she claimed the spirits of the people killed by Winchester rifles told her to.

Winchester died of heart failure in 1922 in her bedroom inside her beloved mansion, Boehme said.

Overall, the presentation about Sarah Winchester was informative and intriguing while the home offered a view into the history of the early 1900s in California. But, at the top of any list of creepy homes in the United States is always the Winchester Mystery House. I genuinely enjoy visiting and seeing places that have become a part of American folklore. I often find that they have an interesting back story and often reveal a great deal of cultural history. Out of the 13 bathrooms in the home, only one was functional, in an effort to confuse any ghosts wishing to haunt a spigot. Furthermore, she would sleep in a different room every night in the Winchester house, and use secret passageways to get from room to room so that no spirits could follow her.

Take a Free Virtual Tour of the Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House is just off Highway 280 and across the street from Santana Row. It isn't always full of colorful leaves and pumpkin lattes and fuzzy sweaters. In fact, it's still summertime, officially, as the first of the "ber" months begins, and the thermometers around the Golden State very much reveal that fact. And when you can get it, all while staying home, and help out a famous California attraction? The feeling is as good as finding a perfect pumpkin in the patch. A year later, rooms that were never opened to the public were put on display, including sections of the home that had remained unfinished at the time of her death.

California’s Dazzling Mosaic Tile House

Mysterious houses designed and constructed by eccentric owners are featured in almost every state. Each of these homes is a mixture of history, folklore, and P.T. There is the Lizzie Borden House in Massachusetts, Craig-E-Clair Castle in New York, the Asa Packer Mansion in Pennsylvania, the House on the Rock in Wisconsin, Coral Castle in Florida, and the actual home of P.T. "After Sarah Winchester passed away, there were no blueprints left behind," shares the attraction on its site, and as well as the fact that this digital experience is the first floor plan created for fans to explore from home.

We’ve been mentioned in many “Top Destination” lists around the world. Though visitors can watch the video tour for free, the Winchester Mystery House is asking visitors to consider purchasing a voucher for use at a later date. My daughter and I found visiting the Winchester Mystery House to be an entertaining way to spend an afternoon.

"We don’t have documentation, but what everyone has always loved is the legends and the lore," Boehme said.

Winchester inherited $20 million after her husband died in 1881, and not long afterward moved from New Haven, Connecticut, to an eight-room farmhouse in orchard-studded Santa Clara Valley. A dedicated crew of carpenters built new rooms so quickly that no one bothered to draw up blueprints. And she didn’t hesitate to make unorthodox building decisions—a stairway ascending to a wall, a closet about an inch deep, a “door to nowhere” that opens to empty space. After she died in 1922, the businessman John Brown rented the house, christened it a tourist attraction, and later purchased it outright.

By design, the restoration left some intriguing rough edges. Near the home’s front door—now in use again—is a room with bare-board walls and a shallow butler’s pantry at the back, like a book squeezed into the end of a shelf. “She often would carve little spaces out of what existed,” Boehme explains.

Additionally, Winchester insisted that the home be built exclusively out of redwood – however, she didn’t like the look of the wood, so she insisted it be covered with a stain and a faux grain. By the time the house was completed, over 20,000 gallons of paint had been used to cover the wood. Despite providing more realistic theories for Winchester's mysteries, Boehme admitted that she has heard her name whispered behind her back when no one else was in the room. However, she hopes people come to the house to learn more about how Winchester was a creative businesswoman. Time magazine once named the Winchester house one of the most haunted places in the world. The house opened for tours just five months after she passed away.

Labyrinth construction

Please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled tour time to find parking or use a ride share service. As you walk away from the house’s manicured grounds, the polished facade of the upscale mall across the street smacks you in the face. And you begin to realize that there’s a comfort to the house’s curling, hidden spaces, a freedom in its eccentricities, a majesty in its abstractions. There’s a thrill, too, in knowing that Winchester likely hid some spaces so well that no one has seen them for over a hundred years. “There’s very possibly things we haven’t discovered yet, just because we don’t have blueprints,” Magnuson says. There’s solace in the idea that, even in privacy-phobic Silicon Valley, there are still secrets at the house—and plenty of questions that don’t really even need answers.

The Winchester Mystery House is in many ways the perfect American roadside attraction in that it is a combination of history and folklore built around the eccentricities of a mysterious, private person. Over her lifetime until she died in 1922, Sarah expanded and renovated her home until it grew in size to 24,000 square feet and featured 160 rooms. Most of Llanada Villa was built in the Queen Anne Revival style, but some sections featured Victorian, Gothic, and Romanesque features. Originally, Sarah hired the services of two architects but eventually dismissed them and drew up many plans for her home herself. These spirits are reportedly what called Winchester to make so many illogical additions to the home.

It would be difficult for anyone to give a definitive assessment of the motivations of Sarah Winchester since she was a private person who did not reveal much to the public. What I do know is that she left us with a mystery and an unusual home as an artifact. In addition to daily tours, guests are encouraged to stroll around the property by taking the self-guided Sarah’s Garden Tour. In true roadside attraction fashion, all visitors exit through an extensive gift shop featuring a variety of souvenirs. Knowing very few details about the history of the Winchester Mystery House, my daughter, Liz, and I booked a weekday noon tour and drove from San Francisco to San Jose.

Inside you'll find quite a few architectural oddities, like a staircase that leads to nowhere, cabinets that open into walls, and a door that opens up to a 12-foot drop. Since 1923, tours have been taking curious visitors through the gargantuan mansion, which remains a famous tourist attraction today. The remnants of the seven-story tower that toppled during the 1906 earthquake—finials, rails, and decorative trimmings that rained down like beads from a chandelier—are kept in the cavernous attic space. To make it accessible to visitors, Taffe’s team has fitted the area with myriad handholds and stabilizing planks.

My daughter and I agreed that the house undoubtedly felt creepy, but not scary. Many of the rooms were dark, unremarkable, and surprisingly small. We did feel like we were walking through a maze as we took a spiraling tour that included various ups and downs, but is also possible the route we followed was intended to create this effect. In 1866, Sarah and William had one daughter, Annie Pardee Winchester, but she died only one month after her birth. William Wirt Winchester died at the age of 44 of tuberculosis soon after the death of his father and mother.

But as Katie Dowd of SFGate points out, there is “scant proof” for this theory. Winchester could have been engaging in an eccentric brand of philanthropy, as she built her home during an economic depression, and the continuous construction project provided jobs for locals. When she died, in fact, the heiress left most of her money to charity.

The house became a tourist attraction nine months after Winchester's death in 1922. The Victorian and Gothic-style mansion is renowned for its size and its architectural curiosities and for the numerous myths and legends surrounding the structure and its former owner. The tale that she believed she had to keep building or she would experience death is not backed up by the actual construction record of the building. There are no records of séances being held in the house and staff members claimed that Sarah had no interest in them. Sarah’s relatives did not back up the claims of her being superstitious and her reclusiveness may have been due to her many physical ailments.

Opinion: Who is House Speaker Mike Johnson? Matt Gaetz's victory lap says it all Los Angeles Times

new house speaker

The new speaker has been in Congress since 2017 and has no experience in the House leadership. Mike Johnson, the Louisiana congressman who was elected speaker of the House of Representatives on Wednesday after a three-week standoff among Republicans, took the lead in filing a brief in a lawsuit that sought to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election win. That claim, widely panned by legal scholars of all ideologies, was quickly thrown out by the U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., told reporters today that she will support Scalise for speaker when the formal vote takes place on the House floor. Also part of the proposal, Republicans familiar with it said, was a commitment by the leader to give the ultraconservative faction approval over a third of the seats on the powerful Rules Committee, which controls what legislation reaches the floor and how it is debated.

Donald Trump is running against Joe Biden. But he …

Ms. Alli and Ms. Cole work under the clerk of the House of Representatives, Cheryl L. Johnson, who is charged with keeping lawmakers in order until a new speaker is elected. The House is back to the floor for its 14th vote for speaker, and the one that Representative Kevin McCarthy is saying will finally clinch the deal for him. Even before the votes had been secured, many at the bar seemed convinced that electing a speaker was inevitable as the vote drew closer to a close. Pats on the back and smiles were exchanged, and many turned their attention away from the TVs. As the vote-casting began, a few people packed their bags, closed out their tabs and left.

Jordan will give the nomination speech for Scalise on the floor

But by late Tuesday night, Mr. Johnson appeared to have put together a coalition that brought him closer to capturing the speakership than any candidate has been since hard-right rebels deposed former Speaker Kevin McCarthy three weeks ago. Though it was not certain he had the votes to be elected, he said he planned to call for a floor vote on Wednesday at noon. Rep. Austin Scott of Georgia, who ran for speaker as a protest candidate against Jordan in the House GOP conference, also voted to certify the 2020 election.

Despite the threat to his leadership, McCarthy passed the temporary budget bill, with the support of Democrats, just hours before the shutdown deadline Saturday night. Gaetz had said he would try to dethrone McCarthy if the GOP leader worked with Democrats to pass a stopgap government funding bill. The House of Representatives voted 216 to 210 on Tuesday to oust McCarthy, following a GOP revolt led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.).

new house speaker

The announcement Friday afternoon came as protests escalated at the school’s campus in Los Angeles after school officials canceled an address by the student, Asna Tabassum, following complaints by a pro-Israel group that she had engaged in antisemitism in social media posts. Since then, Stefanik has led the charge among Republicans, pushing for the resignation of the university leaders. The presidents of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard have already resigned.

“You don’t want people who falsely claim the last election was stolen to be in a position of deciding who won the next one,” said Rick Hasen, a law professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. On Wednesday, he flagged another worry about Johnson, who is a constitutional lawyer. Johnson’s opposition to abortion — he favors a national ban — and to same-sex marriage and LGBTQ+ rights and protections is well documented in his pre-Congress work as an attorney for the socially conservative Alliance Defending Freedom. After the Dobbs decision overturned the constitutional right to an abortion, Johnson suggested that now women would produce more “able-bodied workers,” whose payroll tax contributions would help save Medicare and Social Security. Scalise, who voted to save McCarthy, has not said whether he wants the job. The House will now take a long break, with no votes expected before next Tuesday.

More From the Los Angeles Times

Such steps, however, would inevitably prolong the process of approving spending bills. When Representative Chip Roy of Texas, then a freshman and now one of Mr. McCarthy’s most vocal opponents, forced roll call votes on every amendment in spending bills in 2019, the process of approving them dragged on for two weeks. Proponents of earmarks argue that they allow rank-and-file lawmakers to deliver for their constituents and smooth the process of keeping the government running, by giving members of Congress a tangible reason to vote in favor of spending bills. But Mr. McCarthy’s detractors, hard-line Republicans who have railed against federal spending, have demanded a commitment to crack down on the practice as a prerequisite for supporting him.

The third ballot

In an effort to win them over, Mr. McCarthy has offered to give rank-and-file lawmakers more influence in the process of writing spending bills. One official briefed on that emerging compromise said if a lawmaker took issue with a certain earmark, they could force such a vote. Upon hearing that a speaker had not been elected, shouts of disappointment filled the air. Last call came, before the Republicans voted to go to a 15th ballot instead of adjourning — an unexpected opportunity for another viewing party. The vitriolic attack on the top candidate for speaker from a member of his own party led some of Mr. McCarthy’s supporters to walk off the House floor while he spoke. And by the end of the day, with the majority of the detractors finally coalescing around Mr. McCarthy, Mr. Gaetz appeared to have softened his tone.

Some on the right opposed to Mr. Emmer cited his vote in favor of codifying federal protections for same-sex couples. Others railed against Mr. Emmer’s vote in favor of a stopgap spending bill put forward by Mr. McCarthy, the speaker at the time, to avert a government shutdown. Still others said he was insufficiently loyal to Mr. Trump, because he voted to certify the results of the 2020 election won by President Biden. In a secret-ballot vote on Tuesday night, Mr. Johnson got 128 votes, with 44 Republicans voting for nominees not on the ballot, including 43 for Mr. McCarthy, whom many view as unfairly ousted. Still, in a separate vote afterward, only a few Republicans indicated they would not back Mr. Johnson on the floor, while about 20 Republicans were absent. Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, a founder of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus and someone Mr. Johnson has described as a mentor, was the next member to be elected speaker designate in a secret ballot.

The elevation of Mr. Johnson, 51, an architect of the effort to overturn the 2020 election and a religious conservative opposed to abortion rights, homosexuality and gay marriage, further cemented the Republican Party’s lurch to the right. It came after a historic fight that began when the hard right ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Oct. 3, and raged on as the divided House G.O.P. nominated and then quickly discarded three other candidates to succeed him. Speaker designee Mike Johnson is working the floor ahead of his speakership vote, shaking hands and taking selfies with members. "On behalf of the House Republican conference, I rise today to nominate the gentleman from Louisiana, Mike Johnson, as speaker of the people's house," Stefanik said, which followed loud applause.

The year was 1923, the last time the House required multiple days and repeated votes to settle on a new speaker before this week’s continuing stalemate over the candidacy of Representative Kevin McCarthy, Republican of California. Former President Donald J. Trump made a crucially timed call to Representative Matt Gaetz on Friday night after the Florida congressman voted “present” and sunk Kevin McCarthy’s 14th effort to be elected House speaker. Six of the eight Republican candidates for House speaker voted to decertify the 2020 presidential election on Jan. 6, 2021, in the hours after the assault on the U.S. Since then, nine Republicans have announced they're running, although Rep. Dan Meuser dropped out of the running on Monday night, leaving eight Republicans. All but two of them voted against certifying the 2020 presidential election. According to the rules of the Republican conference, once candidates are nominated — in alphabetical order — if none of the candidates win a majority of votes, the candidate who receives the lowest number of votes will be dropped from the ballot for the next round.

A bloc of Republicans had objected to the speaker bid of Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, the hard-right co-founder of the Freedom Caucus, because of his role in helping lead Mr. Trump’s efforts to overturn the election. Democrats were scathing in their assessment of Mr. Johnson’s ascent to the speakership. Representative Pete Aguilar of California, the Democratic conference chairman, said that the speaker fight had devolved into a contest over “who can appease Donald Trump.” At that line, a handful of hard-right Republicans stood and applauded.

House Speaker Vote: McCarthy Wins Speakership on 15th Vote The New York Times

The wrestlers’ decisions to weigh in adds a new dimension to the speaker race, bringing in a controversial part of Jordan’s past that continues to hang over the Ohio Republican and staunch ally of former President Donald Trump. Four of the former Ohio State University wrestlers who have accused Jordan of failing to protect them from a sexual predator when he was the team’s assistant coach in the 1980s and ‘90s said yesterday that he has no business being the next speaker of the House. This time, Republicans say they won't do the same and are instituting what may henceforth be known as the "McCarthy rule" — requiring that 217 House Republicans sign off behind closed doors. He said Congress should pass a bill to extend current funding levels through April, when a 1% across-the-board cut would automatically take effect, suggesting that would give Republicans leverage on appropriations bills in negotiations with Democrats. "We've got a very bipartisan bill. The McCall-Meeks resolution is ready to go right away to express our support for Israel now. We got to get back to work today," he said. Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., has been serving in an acting capacity as speaker pro tempore.

Melissa covers U.S. politics, with a focus on the Supreme Court and federal courts. The candidates were Reps. Byron Donalds of Florida, Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee, Mark Green of Tennessee, Mike Johnson of Louisiana and Roger Williams of Texas. Although Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was not in the running, he received more votes than Donalds in the final round. Majority Leader Steve Scalise threw his support behind Johnson late Tuesday, calling him a "dear friend" in a statement. Democrats will nominate Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and they are being urged to vote for him, according to a notice from Democratic whip Katherine Clark's office. Rep. Pete Aguilar , the Democratic caucus chair, will deliver the nominating speech for Jeffries.

House GOP to meet at 10 a.m.

McCarthy was in the House for 16 years before he was elected speaker, Pelosi had 20 years of experience, Paul Ryan served for 16 years, and John Boehner had 20 years before he ascended to the top job. During the speaker battle, Trump proved more adept at hurting candidates than helping them win — his early endorsee, Jordan, flamed out on the floor. But Johnson's ability to avoid Trump's ire cleared a hurdle for him within the House GOP, which is attuned to the wishes of the "MAGA" base. A New York Times article last year called Johnson “the most important architect of the Electoral College objections” on Jan. 6, 2021. His argument to colleagues was that certain states’ changes to their voting procedures during the Covid-19 pandemic were unconstitutional, an argument that became more palatable to lawmakers than the fabricated claims of mass fraud. In all, 147 Republicans voted to block the certification of Joe Biden electors.

Former tabloid publisher testifies about scheme to shield Trump from damaging stories

Before the vote in the House, Johnson said he had not spoken to the president, but said he assumed he would soon. Johnson returned to the House to applause from those in the chamber, and McHenry called the House back into order. Johnson listed a number of his priorities, including border security, cutting federal spending and establishing a bipartisan debt commission "immediately." "I think all the American people at one time had great pride in this institution, but right now that's in jeopardy," he said. "And we have a challenge before us right now to rebuild and restore that trust."

Johnson's visit to the campus further elevates the issue, and marks the latest in a series of visits from lawmakers this week. Every Republican member of New York's congressional delegation has called for Columbia's president to resign. Lawler called Gaetz's conduct “disgraceful," following the ouster Tuesday of Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker. Rep. Mike Lawler, a GOP freshman from a swing district in New York, told CNN on Wednesday that he supports calls to expel Rep. Matt Gaetz from the House Republican conference. It marked a victory for the far right that has become a dominant force in the Republican Party, which rose up this month to effectively dictate the removal of an establishment speaker and the installation of an arch-conservative replacement. Stefanik made the argument that Johnson is the best candidate as "we live in perilous times and the American people are hurting." This is the first round of voting with Rep. Mike Johnson as the Republican speaker nominee. CNN Political Director David Chalian notes that as the House approached the halfway mark of the floor vote, Republican Mike Johnson has lost zero votes from members of his party. An attorney with a focus on constitutional law, Johnson joined a group of House Republicans in voting to sustain the objection to electoral votes on January 6, 2021.

He voted against bipartisan legislation to codify same-sex marriage, which Biden signed into law last year. In the Trump presidency, Johnson argued that then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi's move to rip up a copy of his State of the Union speech was a crime. “A lot of people have been talking about this the last 48 hours, and I did a little legal memo to point out to my colleagues that she actually committed a felony,” Johnson said on Fox News at the time. On Tuesday night, after he was nominated, Johnson declined to respond to a question about his role in the election objections. By Tuesday evening, five more Republicans, none with a national profile, were vying for the nomination. Mr. Johnson won after multiple rounds of ballots, beating out Representative Byron Donalds of Florida, a member of the Freedom Caucus.

But Greene has yet to make the motion "privileged," which under the rules would necessitate a vote within two days. Democrats kept the issue center stage as the speaker vote on the floor proceeded Wednesday. The House rejected the right’s favorite to replace McCarthy, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan. Two other Republican nominees, Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota, were in the McCarthy mold; their candidacies fizzled for lack of support (and, in Emmer’s case, from former President Trump’s drive-by shooting).

Scalise addressed reporters this afternoon, saying, "The House is open and doing the people's business." He said he has not yet spoken to his colleagues, but a move to give a nomination speech for Scalise will be a signal to Jordan’s allies, many of whom have said they will still vote for him on the floor. A spokesperson for Jordan told NBC that the Ohio Republican has offered to give a nominating speech on the floor on behalf of Scalise. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a news briefing that she hopes the House GOP "gets their affairs in order and stops the chaos" when she was asked to weigh in on the speaker race. A spokesperson said earlier this afternoon that Jordan plans to give the nomination speech for Scalise on the floor.

Many legal analysts were aghast at the litigation, which was quickly rejected by the high court. In the 2022 midterm elections, two issues — abortion rights and democracy protection — mobilized many voters to elect more Democrats and far fewer Republicans than both parties expected. You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times. McCarthy’s ouster from a job he long coveted was induced by far-right Republicans with the support of vengeance-minded Democrats. This is the first time in U.S. history that a House speaker has been ousted in the middle of his term. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is no longer speaker of the House, following a revolt led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.).

And just shy of his fourth anniversary in the job, he was voted out by the full House Republican conference in December 1998. Johnson is the sixth Republican elevated to the speakership since 1994, the year the party won its first House majority and elected a speaker of its own for the first time in 40 years. The hard truth is that the five who preceded Johnson (McCarthy, Paul Ryan, John Boehner, Dennis Hastert and Newt Gingrich) all saw their time in the office end in relative degrees of defeat or frustration. And to find a Republican speaker who left voluntarily in a moment of victory, moving on to another office, you have to go back to the mid-1920s.

If you truly want the maximum speaker for your money, the huge Fluance XL8F has no equal. From smart speakers to outdoor speakers to immersive home theater systems, every model I've chosen boasts great sound quality and is the best speaker in its particular category. I'll update this list periodically as we review new products, so you can take your audio setup to the next level.

After a mob of Mr. Trump’s supporters, believing the election was rigged, stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 and injured about 150 police officers, Mr. Johnson condemned the violence. But he defended the actions of congressional Republicans in objecting to Mr. Biden’s victory. A social conservative, Mr. Johnson played a leading role in recruiting House Republicans to sign a legal brief supporting a lawsuit seeking to overturn the results.

And that means that while one candidate may have a majority of Republicans after one vote, the process could drag on while they try to wrangle 217 votes before emerging to make it official. House Republicans have scheduled a closed-door vote for 10 a.m., but it remains unclear how long it will take lawmakers to actually head to the House floor and formally vote for a new leader. The two lawmakers are pitted against each other for the GOP speakership nomination. The motion was successful, Rep. Ken Buck said, so either Scalise or Jordan can win the nomination with just a simple majority of the GOP Conference, or 111 votes. Hern quickly announced that he will be running for majority leader — a post that will be vacant if Scalise is able to secure the speaker post. Oklahoma Rep. Kevin Hern posted on X congratulating Scalise on winning the internal GOP vote for speaker.
