Shopping
Visitors can combine a lunch or dinner at one of the District’s many dining options with a day spent walking the streets weaving in and out of stores and galleries. The Water Basket project will paint the two large water tanks located at the highest point in Middletown on Rabbit Hill with 360° murals with designs inspired by Pomo Basketry and the local natural world. A public call for work was posted in October 2023 and closed in January 2024. As the project unfolded over the following years, it became apparent that the anticipated return-to-office life post-pandemic was not materializing. In response, the owners and design team pivoted their focus towards creating a more multi-functional building.
LVMH “Culture House”
The neighborhood is getting a vibrant new makeover with “Utopia,” a special installation by designer Lara Bohinc, in collaboration with Design Miami/ Curatorial Lab, a winner of this year’s Annual Design Commission. Described as “irregular” and “bulbous,” pieces include outdoor seating, tables and oversized light sculptures, as well as a giant centerpiece egg-form and birdhouses dispersed throughout the trees. Bohinc’s pieces are made from cork and painted by hand in vibrant hues paying homage to Miami’s architectural palette. In the Miami Design District headquarter offices, we will be showing 30 works from my collection by the legendary John Baldessari. Many of them have been loaned to institutions like The Metropolitan Museum, LACMA and Moscow’s Garage, and include works from virtually every phase of Baldessari’s monumental career. His legacy isn’t only this body of work but also the influence he had on young artists working today.
Zinc Cafe & Market
Which explains a recent announcement that LACMA is partnering with the upcoming Las Vegas Museum of Art to share both expertise and, eventually, its collection. Mandolin Aegean Bistro boasts a menu that artfully blends Greek cuisine with Turkish influences, featuring a range of classic dishes such as baked feta, chicken kebabs, kofte, roasted cauliflower, and olive tapenade. The predominantly open-air, white-washed ambiance creates a charming atmosphere that’s perfect for sipping on the restaurant’s signature sangria. Their spaces are known for their attention to detail, offering a seamless blend of contemporary artwork within architecturally significant buildings. Artists represented by Hauser & Wirth are often at the cutting edge of their respective fields, pushing boundaries and challenging viewers to think beyond the conventional.
While there are no Design District-specific shuttle services, it's a short, pleasant walk to the ones serving Santa Monica Boulevard. The 1 Hotel West Hollywood is an eco-friendly haven and a designer's dream – and right on the Sunset Strip, within walking distance to nightclubs, restaurants, comedy and more. H.Wood Group originally partnered with Interscope Records to create this live music and club concept, so you’re likely to catch emerging acts and rub elbows with the Hollywood elite coming down from the Hills for a drink. The WHDD covers the Southwestern portion of the city, mainly bound between Melrose Avenue and Beverly Boulevard. The east-west borders are La Cienega and Doheny, with San Vicente cutting a perpendicular swatch through the middle.

From fresh salads and sandwiches to decadent pastries and artisanal coffees, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Don't miss out on their signature avocado toast or the daily soup specials that never disappoint. My personal favorites are the gluten-free potato arugula pizza, Tricolore salad, and truffle fries. With its warm ambiance and welcoming decor, Manuela offers a relaxing setting for guests to enjoy a delectable meal.
Eco-Conscious West Hollywood
John was a giant of a man (he was 6’7”) but his creative influence was equally titanic and I’m excited to share the work of someone who had such an enormous effect on my life. Both institutions will decide what exhibitions will travel to Las Vegas in a process expected to unfold organically as the collaboration develops, Govan and Harmon say. Because the museums are relatively close in proximity, Govan hopes the shows can travel in electric vehicles to reduce the carbon footprint of the exchange. “Women Defining Women in Contemporary Art of the Middle East and Beyond,” “Kimono for a Modern Age,” the museum’s Robert Mapplethorpe collection or its collection of California photography could go.
With a career spanning over 25 years, Atiba Jefferson is one of the most significant skate photographers of our time. And this exhibition, organized by Architecture, the creative studio founded by the late Virgil Abloh, is the most comprehensive of Jefferson’s photography to date — from his most iconic images of legendary athletes to archival gems. This large-scale billboard is the work of Elliot & Erick Jiménez, a first generation Cuban-American twin photo duo. It’s a portrait of Yemaya, the deity syncretized with our Lady of Regla in Cuba and ruler of the seas.
As a native of Miami, I couldn’t be more excited for next week’s 2021 Miami Art Week, where our city shines as art lovers and party-goers once again descend on our Magic City to see all of the amazing art fairs and installations scattered from downtown to the beaches. Aligning well with the art are the countless luxury fashion labels who will be showcasing artists within their stores and through their brand activations. The project was announced at a Middletown Town Hall meeting in 2022 and the concept was unanimously approved by all present.
You might not be able to get a dinner reservation at Catch LA (unless you book in advance), but if you grab a drink at the upstairs bar you can snag a snapshot in front of their famous sign along their foliage-covered corridor. The area of land that is now the Design District was once a pineapple farm in a neighborhood referred to as Buena Vista. Moore, built the historic Moore Building in the 1920s for his family furniture business. The Moore Furniture Building was one of the first stores in the U.S. dedicated strictly to furniture. Spinello Projects, in collaboration with Swampspace Gallery, is set to present VALLE DE LÁGRIMAS (1987), a montage of ten canvases that are a meditation on popular culture and a tribute to Mexican fotonovelas of the 1970s. The monumental work was rendered by Adolfo Rene Sanchez before succumbing to AIDS in 1990.
The Tod’s MOSAIC collection along with the art sculptures by Willie Cole will be on view at the Tod’s Miami Design District boutique through December 6th. The Miami Design District is known for its luxury boutiques, chic galleries, and art-filled showrooms, spanning eighteen square blocks north of the Wynwood neighborhood. But it is also where eating is often not something to do between activities - it is the activity. From Michelin-starred eateries to a vibrant food hall, the ultra-high-end shopping destination has some of the best places to visit for a meal; here are the stops to make when hopping around the Design District. Featuring 30 acres of retail outlets, offices, restaurants, pop-up shops, and plenty of events in Downtown LA, The Row is more than an outdoor shopping mall. The ROW features everything from home goods and wine, to fashion and Japanese bicycles.
